Home-made Etudes

short exercises broken down into beginner’s and advanced parts: improvised on acoustic and electric violin, by Jane

In an effort to help kids love etudes and to enjoy repeating exercises for long enough to solidify the skill, I am creating my own beginner’s etudes based on the techniques I am teaching. I use essential elements needed for correct form and hope these are relaxing and fun to play. You can listen to a part, learn it by ear, then play along with any of the parts in that etude. You can alter the line and make your own variations. Try yours out while playing along with one of the tracks.

I also like to use really familiar folk songs and nursery rhymes that kids will recognize so they can build confidence by quickly being able to play them. Playing something that reminds you of singing helps internalize the feeling of the violin as an extension of your voice.
